Eliade: Critique and Notes

Contain or manifest - which one, they are different things.

(Sacred object contains holiness..)

Eliade thinks of holiness as reservoir that makes itself known every once in a while in, as or through something in this world.

2) Organize paper differently.

Jewish tradition torah scroll is covered - this is begining of paper.

What happens to torah during worship.

Explain what happens in worship (we assumed pple know and didnt explain - but you didnt explain to him that in between readings it is covered.  But I think we should walk away from the tznius aspect of covering it, simply to the basic use of the torah, it is a klaf, but we read from it and worship with it.)

3) You treat it specially - one can recognize it as instance of holiness, why is torah held to be holy?

(Because from g-d- that is mythological.)

What good is religion- gives guidance for life.

Is the cantor standing in place of moses? Proclaiming torah to people - drama where sinai is recapitulated, become contemporary with moses, focuses your imagination on what is important, being people of israel, accepting law at hands of moses that describes a way of living.

For eliade, holy has manifested itself at sinai and comes in the form of law.

In temple, its an imitation of first time, recapitulation.

Awake your imagination to what is important.

Collapsing distance of present to past, reawakening the pledge - yes I will obey the law.

G-d ; “be my pple I will be your g-d.”

“Yes we will be your pple.”

Law describes a way of living.

Holy manifest in sinai, comes in form of law.

Tablets to moses, moses to pple, pple accept.

Ritual remembers a certain time.
Ritual- done in imitation of that time to invite pple to remember that time and rededicate themsleves to the law.

For eliade to be religious
To be in synch is to want to be with the holy, to be in touch with it and to maintain synchronicity with it.

Synchronicity- the simultaneous occurrence of events that appear significantly related but have no discernible causal connection.

What is important about religion to durkheim? Security.

How is torah like a charinga?

Charinga- object protected.

Religion is vehicle for groups to come together and recognize themselves as distinct group, generates the sense of social unity.

Spirits elevated because they come together. Gathering of people = experience effervescence. Party atmosphere.

Torah holds us together, we are the people of the scroll. Experience group identity- forged by the scroll - we are the people who honor the scroll and its contents. We are the people who strive to live in accordance with the contents of the scroll.

Do Elade and durkheim converge? Virtue of- because of dedication to the scroll the jewish people are the jewish people.

Eliade- important is connection with hole, durkheim- holy is what empowers a group to be.

Analyze ritual with scroll- how eliade sees it, how Durkheim sees it, end up in same place.

Every week you renew your dedication to b the people of the scroll.
First paragraph describe :

Tabernacle at end of wall, bow contains, service- tabernacle opened, scrolls covered with retty things, removed, read from, kissed, returned. Why do people do these things? Here is what eliade says here is what durkheim says.
